Pompei
The city was big! It had a population of 10,000-20,000 in 79 ad when Mount Vesuvius erupted. We walked for an hour and saw only a fraction of the city. It had a theatre, stores, bakery, restaurants, bath houses, big houses, small houses and an arena. The small houses would rent out the front rooms as store fronts. All houses would have an open courtyard with fountains and statues and a receiving room then behind that they had more rooms for only family and good friends. They were beautifully decorated with murals on the walls and decorative mosaic tiled floors. They had water tanks and would drain their dirty water into the street. Then they had the sidewalks raised a foot and at intersections they had raised walkways to not get their feet wet. Even in the rain it was a sight to see. The kids were singing in the rain in pompeii.
